Ep: 3×13 Knockdown

Ship rating: 10/10!!!!!!
In an excellent episode (and not just because of the shippiness!) Beckett is contacted by the Detective who worked her mother’s murder case. He asks to see her – alone! She takes Castle with her and the Detective is just about to give her some information when a shot is fired through the window and he is shot dead.
She calls for backup and an ambulance, and everyone arrives on the scene. Montgomery is (lightly)reprimanding her for going there alone, so Ryan and Esposito (I love them!) say they were her back up; they were just down the road. Aww.
Castle is a bit shocked – having just seen someone shot dead right in front of him. He admits that when he saw the blood on Beckett’s top he thought she had been shot. An excellently played moment where it is clear he is saying so much more than that, and she is understanding what he is not saying!
They begin to look into what the Detective could possibly have needed to tell Beckett, following leads here and there. When one suspect taunts Beckett about her mother’s death, she snaps and bashes him into the interrogation room wall – smashing the mirror (go Beckett!). Montogomery removes her from the case; sends Castle home and puts Ryan and Esposito in charge of the investigation. They try to respectfully decline the assignment but turns out there’s small print on Montgomery’s Captain badge that tells them to get out there and solve the shooting – who knew?!
At home with Castle, Martha is shaken up by the fact that he could have been killed that morning. She points out to him that he wrote 22 books before he met Beckett and he didn’t need to spend all his time with the police to do that. He admits it’s not just about the books anymore!!!!!!!!!!!
Castle goes to Beckett’s house with his plan of action: they were removed from the Detective Raglan case, but not from Beckett’s mother’s case. He has a plot to sneak into the precinct and steal the file, but it’s not necessary as Beckett has a ‘file’ of her own. So they do some more digging there, and uncover some photographs that lead Castle to go sneak into the precinct to look at old files.
In the meantime, Ryan and Esposito discover that their latest suspect has been watching Beckett. Montgomery gives her a security detail – and has also caught Castle hiding in the precinct men’s room going through old files. When Castle returns to Beckett’s apartment, she asks him to go home where he’ll be safe. She says she signed up for the danger when she joined the police; he didn’t. He says he’s not going anywhere, (specifics are in Shipworthy Scenes – because this scene is shipworthy!) and she asks him why he keeps coming back. AND SHE CALLS HIM ‘RICK’!!!!!
Ryan and Esposito find a lead that … er… well… leads them to two different women. So Castle and Beckett go to find one, and Ryan and Esposito the other one. Castle and Beckett find their woman dead. However, the suspect they’ve been looking for follows Ryan and Esposito and abducts them. While Beckett and Castle work to figure out where they are, their abductor tries to torture them until they tell him how much the police know about him. They refuse to give him information and are determined to jerk him around.
Beckett and Castle work out the location, but it is guarded outside and they need to distract the guard. So, of course, they pretend to be a happy, tipsy, couple out for a stroll. The guard approaches them and doesn’t seem to be buying it, so Castle KISSES BECKETT!!! When they break, Beckett seems to realise that it’s a good plan and SHE THEN KISSES HIM AND THEY KISS FOR A LOOOOOOOOOOOONG TIME!!!!!!! until the guard is suitably distracted and then Beckett knocks him out. Castle’s reaction: “Amazing.” And of course he wasn’t talking about her ninja skills. (let us SQUEEEEEEEEEEE!) And the way he touches his lips and shivers afterwards is so freakin’ cute! lol.
They go inside; they rescue Ryan and Esposito and abductor guy is just about to shoot Beckett when Castle pounces on him and incapacitates him. He gets a really sore hand, but it’s definitely worth it.
In the course of the investigation, they find out that everything is being controlled by someone they cannot find. So, Beckett visits abductor guy in prison and asks who hired him. He won’t give up the information. She makes sure he knows that she isn’t going to give up.
Beckett asks Castle to go with her to the diner.
Castle: Come on in.
Beckett: Can we talk for a second?
After the shooting investigation begins.
Beckett: You good?
Castle: Yeah, I think I got it all off my hands.
Beckett: It’s different when it happens right in front of you. You’re close enough to watch the lights go out.
Castle: Yeah… When I saw the blood on your shirt, I thought you’d been shot.
Beckett: … Erm, I’m gonna go to the twelfth. How about I drop you off at your place?
Castle: Not a chance.
Castle and Martha talk
Castle: You think I should quit?
Martha: I think you should be honest with yourself about why you’re doing this. You have written twenty-two novels before you met her and you didn’t need to spend every day in a police station in order to finish them.
Castle: It’s not about the books anymore.
Castle goes to Beckett’s apartment after they’ve been removed from the case.
Beckett: Hey Castle.
Castle: Hey. Where’s Josh?
Beckett: Oh, he’s in Africa. He’s saving the world.
Castle: I bought you some… Er… I just thought after everything you might wanna… Here.
Beckett: Thank you. It’s really sweet… You wanna come in?
Castle: Sure. (Looks round her apartment) Wow. Nice. You know, I was thinking on the way over here, all the best cops – Dirty Harry, Cobra, the guy from Police Academy who makes the helicopter noises – they all have one thing in common.
Beckett: Plucky sidekick?
Castle: That and they do their very best work after they’ve been booted off a case.
Looking for clues in Beckett’s mom’s case.
Castle: (looking at photos of young Beckett) Aww, you were adorable. Did your mom take these?
Beckett: Yeah. About three weeks before she died.
Castle: Aww, I don’t get to see you in action?
Beckett: Trust me Castle it was not pretty.
Castle: Well now I have to see it.
Castle goes back to Beckett’s apartment.
Castle: (when Beckett opens the door with a gun in her hand) You talked to Montgomery?
Beckett: Yeah. Castle, there’s something I need you to do.
Castle: Name it.
Beckett: Go home.
Castle: Forget it. Fear does not exist in this dojo.
Beckett: Look, I signed up for this when I put that badge on. You didn’t. It’s not your fight.
Castle: The hell it isn’t. I don’t hang around you just to annoy you. I don’t ride out to murder scenes in the middle of the night just to satisfy some morbid curiosity. If that’s all this was I would have quit a long time ago.
Beckett: Well then why do you keep coming back, Rick?
Castle: Look, I may not have a badge, unless you count the chocolate one Alexis gave me for my birthday. But I’ll tell you this, like it or not, I’m your plucky sidekick.
Beckett: Plucky sidekick always gets killed.
Castle: Partner then.
Beckett: Okay. What’d you find?
Beckett: (giggly) He’s not buying it, Castle.
After Castle knocks out abductor guy to save Beckett.
Beckett: You okay?
Castle: Huh?… Never better.
In the ambulance after Castle’s hand has been treated.
Beckett: Hey there, Chuck Norris… How’s the hand?
Castle: Er, excruciating.
Castle: How’s Ryan and Esposito?
Beckett: Hmm. Mild hypothermia. Wounded pride. Guess which’ll heal first… Thank you. For having my back in there.
